Alumni documentary

Education, a force that helps us combat anxiety. Once high school education concludes, the lives of learners are just beginning. Our education should tirelessly prepare learners for the next better school, but it must go beyond that. In the long journey of life, what can education truly bring to them? With this thought in mind, Yang Zale, the co-founder of Moonshot Academy, traveled alone in 2024 to eight cities in China and the United States, visiting ten students who graduated from Moonshot Academy. He experienced a typical day in their lives, observing what they do, think about, aspire to achieve, and questioning what education has really given them in their lives.

MSAer's Persona

  • A guide who is eager to help others and convey strength.

  • An explorer who is open-minded, curious, and keen to experience.

  • A practitioner who is highly self-driven and continuously grows.

Why do we choose to be MSAers?

Freedom - Ellen Wang(Joined in 2024)

I truly value the autonomy and freedom we have to design our courses and experiment with instructional strategies that best align with our learners' interests and needs. I also appreciate the strong relationships students build with their teachers and coaches, where teachers are not just seen as authority figures but as approachable mentors. It's inspiring to see how proactive students are in seeking guidance that extends beyond the classroom. The vibrant campus life—whether through sports competitions, house initiatives, or student exhibitions—is another highlight for me. There are always amazing activities happening every week.

Community of Co - Learning - Dora (Joined in 2021)

What makes Moonshot Academy truly remarkable is that it is a "community of co - learning," offering me the opportunity to grow and adapt. Many things here are learned and done simultaneously, which has helped me overcome my perfectionism to a certain extent! First and foremost, I am extremely grateful to the teachers who have stood by me. The educators at Moonshot are genuinely dedicated to teaching and nurturing students, and they are an exceptionally positive and kind - hearted group of people. They provided me with steadfast support and encouragement during my darkest days. I am also deeply thankful to my first batch of students. I am well aware of my own shortcomings, so I often collect feedback from the students and make targeted adjustments. Thank you to those lovely students who have accompanied me on this journey of growth. It is your encouragement and recognition that have made me stronger and more determined. In the future, remember to give your teachers more praise as well!

Comrades - Blue (Joined in 2018)

Perhaps it's because I'm getting older, but the most memorable events for me at Moonshot Academy all date back to the early days of its founding.

The first event was the 2049 project, which was the most unique start - of - school experience I've ever had. We spent a month working on several projects centered around the theme of 2049 and then presented our findings together. At the beginning of the project, the teachers dressed up in all sorts of eccentric costumes. Lao Zhang and Bao Bao wore colorful wigs. I can't remember what I looked like, but I'm sure it was something comical. It felt like being part of a vibrant, creative group of young people, leading an even younger group to do something really cool.

The second event was a few of us being sequestered in a hotel to discuss Moonshot's values. At that time, there were numerous meetings, endless questions, and an overwhelming sense of uncertainty, which put everyone under immense pressure. To use the buzzword of the time, there was a lot of "tension" internally. So, under the guidance of a corporate coach (whose names I've unfortunately forgotten), we engaged in tension - management exercises. I remember that at the start of each session, we would meditate for a few minutes. It was my first introduction to meditation (to be honest, I've been exposed to a lot of new things since I came to Moonshot). Together, we reviewed Moonshot's history, what we had done right, what had happened, our shared mission, and values, and ultimately reached a consensus.

A Space for Free Spirited Growth - Janice (Joined in 2020)

At Moonshot, I have held fast to my un - tarnished educational Initial Aspiration; At Moonshot, I have gradually understood and practiced the responsibilities and significance of being a guardian; At Moonshot, I have felt the warmth of a "blazing community" from my colleagues and learners; At Moonshot, I have been able to gradually see clearly "who I am"……"A space for free - spirited growth" remains the most beautiful Moonshot in my heart. If I had the chance to choose again, I would still come to Moonshot.

Caring about the whole child - Andrew (Joined in 2024)

I feel that Moonshot is the first school I have worked at that cares about the whole child. It doesn't push academics above all else, thus adding pressure to the students.

Human Centered - Sophie (Joined in 2023)

Feeling accommodated and seen. There's a sense of genuine human interaction happening all the time, rather than everyone just going through the motions and following procedures.

Authenticity - Wang Yang (Joined in 2018)

A great deal of sincerity stems from the authenticity that Moonshot has taught me over these years. Countless scenarios have allowed me to experience the power of authenticity. I will also use the opportunity to participate in admissions again to test how much pretense I still have and how many of my true selves need to be revealed. Can I still be as innocent as those children planting flowers in the courtyard, being genuine with myself and with the world?

People often ask me what I have gained from Moonshot, and I always mention authenticity. Genuine people create authentic situations, do real things, and in turn, become more authentic themselves.

Authenticity also enables me to discern whether my choices and actions are driven by love or by fear. The same action, the same decision, can have vastly different processes and outcomes depending on whether they are motivated by love or by fear. Similarly, the choices and actions made out of love versus those made out of fear can have a world of difference.

Living in truth-Douglas Abrahamson( Joined in 2020)

There is a seemingly simple idea I came across back in university. It has long been important for me and – now that I think of it - may well have informed the resolution to my epistemological panic described above. The idea is that, to authentically navigate whatever circumstances you find yourself in, there is an existential need for “living in truth”. This idea now seems, in an age of the internet, social media, consumerism etc., like the surest way to be in the world. So when we at MSA have the goal of wanting our students to be “fulfilled individuals” achieving the personal sense of excellence I wrote about above, well, it seems to me like an important part of it is “living in truth”. And the more I reflect on it, the more I like how these ideas overlap and reflect on each other. It adds a solidity to what could otherwise be fragile intuitions and, especially now, everyone needs a sense of that firmness. In a way, knowing that you are part of a community, that you are both resilient and yet your success is also contingent on the contributions of others – and theirs on yours – here we get the seeds for “compassionate, active citizens”. That you can take risks and know that your colleagues, teachers, and classmates have your back – that what you’re doing is worth doing – this is part of the Moonshot spirit that I know. And, to circle back to our Canadian poem, “if to be a fool is sometimes my own good luck”, well, in my case that good luck is also fully contingent on being part of this young, dynamic, and caring institution.

A Growth Utopia - Candice (joined in 2023)

This is my workplace community.

There are no rigid clock - in systems, no top - down lectures from leadership, and certainly no workplace PUA.

What we do have are ample opportunities for growth and learning.

No matter the summer solstice, winter solstice, Teachers' Day, or any other holiday, we are treated to Michelin - standard meals and various fragrant comforts, all provided by the parents, along with their loving pats and care...
