Each academic year, the department organizes various themed community activities based on holiday characteristics and student development needs. These include community days where new and old families gather together, curriculum nights that help parents further understand teaching and education, sports meets where teachers, students, and parents compete on the same field, warm and surprise-filled winter concerts, and the highly anticipated winter feasts full of festive flavors, among others. The loving community culture is the result of the joint efforts and creations of Moonshot learners, staff, and numerous families.
Every academic year, some school-level events will be held at MSA to help build the culture of MSA. All members of MSA, including parents, are invited to participate.
At MSA, the Starting Ceremony is the opening ceremony. We will witness the beginning of each learner's MSA journey on that day.
Various kinds of school meetings and assemblies will be organized, including themed meetings organized by different grades and departments. At these meetings, we will congratulate on and share some important stories that have happened in our community, to experience MSA values and cultures again, and be notified of important arrangments of the coming weeks.
π Day is an annual event where the math department organizes nine stations featuring unique mathematical games. Students collect game cards and visit each station, collecting stamps and competing to gather the most stamps within a time limit for the chance to win valuable prizes. The event is designed to spark students' interest in mathematics, hone their mathematical thinking, and provide an exciting learning experience each year.
We hold an annual spring or autumn sports meeting. The sports meeting features both individual and team competition events. We hope to encourage the diversified development of learners, cultivate the spirit of sportsmanship and fair competition, and enhance community cohesion and the sense of belonging through the establishment of traditional competitions.
On the days of the Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu) and Winter Solstice, students' families prepare a grand community meal, where each family contributes a specialty dish from their hometown. The entire school community gathers to enjoy food and learn about various regional traditions and customs.
At the end of each semester, every course hosts an exhibition where students' work is showcased in diverse formats. Parents and members of the broader community are invited to participate, providing feedback and witnessing students' growth. This is one of the most vibrant days in the community, with everyone shining and sharing their achievements.
Moonshot is a vibrant garden of curiosity and vitality. With children’s sparkling eyes, teachers’ gentle guidance, and the immersive monthly thematic activities into daily life, education becomes tangible.
From September to June, we design unique thematic journeys aligned with children’s developmental rhythms: the New Student Orientation Month for newcomers, the Chinese Cultural Immersion Month that ignites cultural roots through traditional crafts and festive stories, the Nonviolent Communication Month fostering love and inclusivity, the Global Cultural Awareness Month exploring world stories and cuisines, the Safety & Wellness Month focusing on physical and mental health, and more. Through these journeys, children feel fully supported and empowered to become their best selves.
At Moonshot Academy, the "Four Houses" serve as units where learners and educators live together and engage in collective discussions. This concept arose from our discussions about the expanding nature of Moonshot Academy — where the school should not be a rigid, mechanical institution, but rather a living, dynamic organization. The Houses are learner organizations that transcend grade levels and classes. They can be led by learners and also serve to enrich the lives of learners at Moonshot Academy. The House is a unit for activities, also a cultural unit, an important space where learners engage in public discussions.
Why do we have the House system? The English translation for "书院" is usually "House," and this translation is achieved through a connection — specifically the corresponding projection of 'groups' in the context of "groups formed by people" as it is understood in both Eastern and Western contexts.
In English, "House" emphasizes a unit of communal living, generally defined by shared or nearby physical space. Within a House, a communal living environment can be created. In Chinese, "书院" first appeared around the 9th century, originally referring to places where books were collected, gradually evolving into private libraries. From the Song to Qing dynasties, the concept of the house carried rich and complex historical significance, serving groups ranging from local clans to the general public, and its curriculum ranged from imperial examination preparation to more idealistic social goals, undergoing frequent changes.
Generally, "书院" has always carried the basic meaning of a place of learning for like-minded individuals
The Four Houses in Middle School maintain the color scheme of Moonshot High School's Four Houses – White, Green, Blue, and Gold, symbolizing "道法自然" (Tao follows nature): in Chapter 25 of the Tao Te Ching, it is written, "The Tao is great, heaven is great, earth is great, and man is also great. In the universe, there are four great forces, and man is one of them. Man follows the earth, the earth follows heaven, heaven follows the Tao, and the Tao follows nature."
Curiousity | Open-Minded | Freedom | Humanistic
The phrase 济济多士,秉文之德 (Jǐjǐ duō shì, bǐng wén zhī dé), from The Book of Songs · Zhou Song · Qing Miao, embodies the core value of 'Benevolence (Ren)' at White House. White symbolizes the primal purity of creation's dawn, an untouched canvas of innocence. It also represents the synthesis of all seven rainbow hues, reflecting a spirit that embraces the vastness of existence.
Sunshine | Health | Combat | Challenge
"Liujin" (鎏金) draws inspiration from the imagery of "gilded light dancing, all things awakening" in the poem from the *Complete Tang Poetry Anthology*, symbolizing the rising sun and the revitalization of all life, mirroring the vibrant vitality of Jin Academy. The Academy, brimming with passion and dynamism, inspires all its learners to continuously pursue excellence, challenge their limits, and unleash boundless potential.
Sincere | Brave | Purity | Aesthetic
The name "Ruo Shui" originates from the philosophical concept of "the highest goodness is like water" found in the "Tao Te Ching" (Classic of Virtue), symbolizing humility, inclusiveness, and resilience akin to water. Though soft and yielding, water can overcome the hard and strong; though situated in a lowly place, it can nourish all things. It represents a spirit of non-contention and quiet dedication, while also containing boundless strength and wisdom. The middle school's "Ruo Shui" house is in line with the high school's "Shang Shan" house, reflecting the inheritance and continuation of the house culture.
Simplicity | Passion | Innocence | Dream
The name "Qing Li" originates from the story of Liu Xiang in the Han Dynasty, who burned a type of grass called "li" to light his way while studying and editing books. This symbolizes the transmission of knowledge and the enlightenment of wisdom. Qingli Academy takes its name from this tale, aiming to carry forward the spirit of diligent scholarship and the pursuit of truth exemplified by ancient sages, inspiring every student to continuously explore the ocean of knowledge and strive for greater heights. Qingli students believe that with passion and relentless effort, they can write their own glorious chapters on this land brimming with hope.
Every interest is a call of an innate tendency in nature, and perhaps also a flash of genius in its primitive state. We hope that learners can discover their most authentic and talented selves in after-school clubs.
